CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 1
I have produced “Chronicles Of Music” to be such a magazine which not only focuses on showcasing interviews and music reviews but also give an insight of the duo through a photoshoot. My magazine mainly targets audiences who are teenagers and those who are interested in the musical world. However, it also targets adults as concluded by the survey analysis, therefore striking and engaging elements have been added to catch their attention. This is the typical audience that would want to read this magazine.
I had a clear image in my head of what I wanted my final products to look like, and went with my gut and trusted my instincts to produce something that I’m proud of. I tried to design my magazine keeping in mind the codes and conventions of the music genre, which is very important because the audiences are easily attracted to the product they are familiar with. This in turn increases the chances for a better sale of the magazine. After analyzing plenty of music magazines, I got a better understanding of the codes and conventions of such magazines. This helped me decide how I wanted my magazine to be while including nearly all the conventions. The overall look and presentation of the magazine follows the codes and conventions of a music magazine rather than challenging it.
The first convention used was the Main Image. Most music magazines have a solo artist or a band as the main image. This is usually the feature in the magazine and is always an image that is appealing to the audience. Considering this convention, I used a close-up shot of Roshaan from the duo with a bright red light as my main image to grab the audience’s attention. I definitely conformed to the use of main image that is attractive enough to compel the audience to purchase the magazine. Moreover, Mastheads of music magazines are usually bright and bold and is something related to the magazine; their colour also matches the house style of that particular magazine. The Masthead of my magazine “Chronicles Of Music” is white coloured against a dark red background which makes it stand out. The masthead also clearly suggests the genre of the magazine and informs the audience that the content will be focused more on musical bands and interviews than anything else. Next thing was the colour palette. Such magazines normally use bright, loud and vivid colour schemes to go with the dull main image, aiming to stimulate the taste of buyers. Mine was no exception, I went with a vibrant colour scheme in accordance to my attractive pictures to immediately attract the audience’s attention. Again, the conventions were used. In addition to this, coverlines are used to give detail about the content inside the magazine, hence they should be captivating enough to force the audience to read the magazine.
Keeping this in mind, I tried making my coverlines very stylish and used different fonts and sizes for variety. I predominantly used handwritten and bold fonts, as used in music magazines, to give a sense of warmth and personal touch to the magazine. On top of that, I made sure my front cover is not crowded with coverlines as this was one of the conventions I noticed the most when analyzing music magazines. Besides that, other conventions of the cover page i.e. puffs and buttons, buzzwords, barcode, skylines and taglines have also been used which gave the cover page a more realistic effect. Overall in the production of my cover page, no visible conventions were challenged and the cover page was purely based on the conventions.
On the contrary, I challenged quite a few conventions of a contents page as through my extensive research the most noticeable convention is the amount of pictures surrounding any contents page. However, I opted to include two main images around the right hand side of the page with the text on the left hand side. Nonetheless, I followed the conventions when writing the page numbers and the text written next to the page numbers.
While producing my double-page spread, I conformed to the conventions as well as challenged them. I used the conventional way of placing the main image on one side of the page while adding the text on the other. The text was written in columns, drop capital was used. These are some basic conventions of a double-spread. However, I challenged the convention of the main text, as usually a music magazine features a photoshoot and music reviews of various artists but instead I went with an interview with the duo whose pictures were added on the other page.
My magazine “Chronicles Of Music” specifically targets people who have recently heard about the duo and want to know more about them and how they started. My magazine showcases a variety of music artists and their work along with new music releases and album releases. Furthermore, this magazine might also encourage the new and upcoming artists to tell the world about them and their work. This will help the society to accept the rising stars.
